Sector 1: Rio Rico NE

1. RIO RICO NE
Size: 9.7 sq. mi.

GENERAL: Mostly by car, but some opportunities for birding by foot along washes, quieter roads, and possibly around agricultural fields.

NOTES: Agricultural fields and mesquite bosque adjacent to the Santa Cruz River for the whole length of Pendleton Drive along the western edge of the sector, wherever accessible, should be checked carefully. It is private land, and thus not fully accessible. Low density residential areas and foothills washes, heading up into the foothills of the San Cayetano Mountains along Via San Cayetano and Camino Canoa.
Includes Rio Rico Drive east of the railroad, and the former Rio Rico Pond (now dry). COORDINATE WITH SECTOR # 21 LEADER about the counting of the ag fields on the western edge.

TARGET SPECIES: In ag fields, check for shorebirds, and maybe geese or other water birds. Use Botteri's Sparrow playback in higher grassy hills for these and other grassland sparrows. Check around houses where there are pyracantha and other berry bushes, where privacy is not an issue.
